My Lightwork Journey

Ecovillage Flower

About 10 years ago now, I moved to Vancouver from a northern Gulf Island. I was coming out of a tumultuous time; it was the end of a relationship. I was full-on soul searching and making a major course correction in my life. I was ready to let go of pretty much anything that stood in the way of finding a renewed sense of myself.

I moved to Vancouver to take the Lightwork Level 4: Transformation program. I felt hopeful about this decision and other big changes I’d made; I landed a new job and scored a great apartment, seemingly overnight.

Settling into the city felt like taking a plunge into a deep sea. It felt rattling, relentless, unfriendly and cold. I missed the green and wild of island life.

I couldn’t get over the realities of city-living, like hearing the pedestrian walk signal from my apartment, and feeling the thick concrete floor always beneath me. It was a new and different place to call home. And while I had deep sense that I would find my way, it was definitely one of the most uncomfortable times of my life.

In retrospect, I now understand the enormity of what that move represented. I was basically laying it all on the line, spiritually speaking. I needed answers to some important questions that had been plaguing me, and a way out of an unhealthy relationship pattern. I was doing major repair work, and everything in my life was changing around me. I was in the throes of an intense transformation.

At times I felt raw and vulnerable. Sometimes uneasy. Sometimes emotional. Yet simultaneously more comforted, more at peace and more free.

At some point, I realized that I was out of the woods, so to speak. And I was ready to give back. This was a wonderful shift.

Skip ahead to present time and my life feels quiet, strong and settled. I see now that it’s hard to witness one’s own transformation while it’s underway; it’s hard to know that it’s actually happening. But with commitment to a healing path, change does happen and pain is alleviated. It just takes a little while sometimes.

Now, as one of the Lightwork staff, it gives me great joy to teach meditation classes and give energy healings to others. This past year I’ve had the honour of assisting the current Level 4: Transformation students as they dive into their own self-healing journeys. What a thing, to see the process full-circle, and now be in a position to offer support. I am immensely grateful. I can’t think of anything more satisfying.

The Power of a 1-Minute Meditation

Jacqueline // January 31st, 2018

Julia Watson

It was the end of my work day, and I needed to rush out the door to make a class. I’d been reconciling a project budget all afternoon, but the figures on the spreadsheet just weren’t adding up. The final budget was due on my boss’ desk the next morning. I felt the pressure rising up within me – I was getting irritated and upset that I couldn’t find the error.

That’s when I noticed that I was in a state of effort and resistance. So, I closed my eyes, sat back in my chair, took a deep breath, and centered myself. I grounded and shifted into a state of flow. I reminded myself that everything can be done from a state of ease or effort. I had been attempting to solve the problem using effort, and clearly it wasn’t working.

I asked myself, what if I tried again from a state of ease and flow? I let a smile grow on my face and I felt the tension leave my body. I opened my eyes and calmly gazed at the spreadsheet. I immediately saw the formula error and corrected it in seconds.

I couldn’t believe it! My own fears of failing had clouded my mind, blocking my ability to see clearly. A simple 1-minute meditation reset and I was operating from a clear place again.

Since then I regularly use a 1-minute meditation as a reset technique along with the powerful question, “What would it be like if this easy?”

Finding a Richer Life

Leslie Dickout // December 31st, 2017

Life in North America is designed to be busy. We are expected to fill our time
with work, friends, family, social media, travel, and a host of other activities. I
believed for a long time the fuller my life was, the richer my experience of life
was. And although I have no regrets, I recall the moments when I thought my
life was at its “richest” and still there felt like something was missing, or that I
wasn’t truly happy.

Meditation has allowed me to make room for what was missing…simplicity.
Calm. Presence. Me. Instead of filling my time with more and more, the most
fulfilling thing I do is the same meditation each day that brings me back to my
centre, to my grounding, to that quiet yet alive place that is me. It’s a kind of
fulfillment I have only dreamed of.

Experiencing life from this place has made everything I do throughout my days
that much richer. From taking in the changing leaves on the trees in autumn to
having conversations with loved ones, interactions with colleagues, or time by
myself. Being more present in each moment, and letting that be enough, has
allowed me to feel the true richness of my life.

What is Lightwork Meditation?

Julia W. // October 31st, 2017

Lightwork meditation focuses on awareness of the human energy system to keep your body healthy and Spirit bright. Instead of focusing on watching the breath, you consciously move your energy through your energy channels and energy centres.

You still your thoughts as you move the energy throughout your body, letting go of tension and anxiety. It is an active, engaged form of meditation that can work well for anyone more used to doing rather than being.

Living a Textured Life

Cathy // September 26th, 2017

I am extremely grateful to be on the journey of self-discovery and growth.

Over the summer I was taking stock of my life with some changes in mind.  As I did this review, I realized that I live a very textured life.  My life is rich in experiences and relationships.

Meditation has helped me get to this place. It has supported me in letting go of fear and limiting thought patterns. I have been able to open my creativity and express myself more clearly, develop more authentic relationships and simply be me.

Dating: Letting Go of Insecurities

Julia W. // September 1st, 2017

Julia Watson

Needless to say, dating can be anxiety producing.

The smallest thing can trigger nervousness as insecurities come to the surface. Wondering if your comments were misunderstood or if your hair is sticking up. You wish you wouldn’t care what your date thinks about you…but this is super challenging when you are attracted to someone.

Meditation helps me let go of all the critical voices in my head, and reset to a state of calm and love for myself. It relaxes my body and brings a sense of peace.

From this more relaxed, self-referencing state, I can find my sense of humour again, and have a good laugh at the awkwardness and embarrassments that dating someone new can bring.

An Ode to The Lightwork Ecovillage

Lightwork Ecovillage

I love being there

The stillness of it

How off-the-grid it is

How it supports letting go

Of all the racing around in the city

About the Lightwork Ecovillage

The Ecovillage is an 80-acre piece of land dedicated to having spiritual practice in daily life, in harmony with nature. It has a permaculture garden and we hand-build the shelter on the land.

Cathy’s Perspective on Lightwork

Cathy // May 30th, 2017

Lightwork meditation teaches you how to focus your energy.

It teaches you how to be aware of when your mind wanders, and you learn techniques that help you to refocus your attention.

It also provides opportunities to change things in your life so that you can live with less confusion, and fewer feelings of being scattered or not on top of your game.

This can affect life’s biggest and smallest things. For example, Lightwork has helped me become more organized simply by seeing that if I changed just a couple things in my daily routine, I would feel less stretched and overwhelmed. Instead of having many things on the go, I learned to bring things to completion as they came up.

With these changes I feel better about myself, more capable and settled.

Coping with Life’s Curve Balls

Julia W. // April 28th, 2017

Julia Watson, Lightwork Meditation Teacher

I’m not a parent as I always thought I would be. At around 35 years old, I realized that in fact I might not have kids. I wasn’t in a relationship, and I was clear I didn’t want to raise kids solo, so I began to have to face the possibility that it might not happen.

Meditation helped me to navigate the immense sadness that arose. I realized that I had really bought into the idea that kids were the key to living a fulfilled life as a woman.  If I didn’t have kids, could I even call myself a woman? I was surprised at the intensity and longevity of my emotions about this issue.

But meditation helped me see that I am valid no matter what. Kids or no kids. It makes no difference. Now in my forties, I feel free of that sadness and fully embrace life without kids. Life is rich and full, and its joys are available to everyone.

Energy is Real

Julia T. // March 29th, 2017

Julia Thiessen

Learning Lightwork meditation has helped me understand how to manage my energy.

I can do a meditation to be more grounded. And I’ve learned that being grounded affects my perceptions and experiences of life. I feel safer. More present. I’m more effective in whatever I’m doing.

Now I know I can shift my energy by meditating. I’ve become much more conscious of my energy system, so I can assess what needs to happen for me to feel more at ease, more in flow. I can increase my flow of energy by doing a meditation.

Everything in the universe is made up of energy, so learning about how energy works is truly fascinating. It’s helped me understand myself and the world so much more deeply.

Scott Robinson

In 1995, after years of spiritual study, Scott founded Lightwork Spiritual Development, of which he is the Spiritual Director. Since 1995 he has been teaching intensively.

Scott believes that on a core level every spiritual teacher of integrity is teaching the same thing, because the core spiritual principles never change. However, there are unlimited ways to express these principles, and every spiritual teacher and practice has its own unique flavour. Finding a flavour that one likes is the task of the seeker.

Scott is also an artist, musician and poet, and has traveled the world extensively. He feels his purpose is to be on his spiritual path and to assist others on their path. His teaching is safe and supportive with amusement and integrity.

Krista Love

Krista first discovered Lightwork thanks to a tiny poster on Hornby Island. At the time she was practicing yoga and writing a play, but yearned for her true calling. Something about that little poster spoke to her and she hitchhiked to a Lightwork Healing Space event. Soon after she took Lightwork Level 1.

Her love for the practice was so immediate she packed her bags and moved to Vancouver to continue her studies, despite having no job or place to live. She made her way through several years of intensive training, graduating from the Lightwork Teacher’s program in 2003, and later becoming the first person ever to complete the apprenticeship program.

Krista says Lightwork allowed her to transform into the person she always knew she could be. As a teacher, she loves helping people tune into themselves as Spirit and bringing levity to any situation.

Krista teaches a wide range of classes including Lightwork Levels 1 to 3.5, Lightwork Moving Meditation and classes geared for women and parents.

Prior to Lightwork Krista attended theatre school, became a yoga teacher and received a diploma in clowning.

Alison Cretney

Alison has been practicing Lightwork meditation since 2007. As a certified Lightwork teacher, she offers classes suitable to first-time meditators or anyone who has practiced other meditation styles. You can attend her classes in beautiful Nelson, BC, or by phone or Skype.

Alison has found Lightwork's clarity, ease and potency to be transformative in all aspects of her life including parenting, work, relationships and stress.

She has a Masters in Strategic Leadership Toward Sustainability which she applies in collaborative projects seeking solutions for climate change.

Julia Watson

Julia offers meditation and consulting services for organizations and individuals.

She started her conscious spiritual journey in her mid-twenties but it wasn’t until she came across Lightwork in 2002 that she found a meditation practice that really worked for her.

Julia completed Lightwork’s seven levels of training in 2010. She has been joyfully teaching meditation classes and offering private energy readings since then.

She was previously the Program Director at Hollyhock (Canada’s leading educational retreat centre), the Director of Operations at Communicopia Internet, and a producer of the Web of Change conference.

Julia received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University in 1994. She received a permaculture design certificate in 2000.

Julia Thiessen

Julia started taking Lightwork classes by phone from Winnipeg in 2004. The classes rocked her world so thoroughly she moved to Vancouver to continue her meditation studies, eventually graduating from Lightwork's most advanced program, 'Level 7: The Apprenticeship' in 2012.

Her move to the West Coast allowed her to become involved in the Lightwork Ecovillage, where she continues to deepen her meditation practice and learn life lessons ( really can grow kale year round!).

Julia is a certified Lightwork Teacher. She offers Lightwork Level 1 and Level 2 classes for beginners, as well as private energy reading sessions.

She brings creativity to the Lightwork administration team, and manages two annual meditation retreats: the summer '9-Day Dharma Healing', and 'Winter Light Week'.

She has an intuitive and studied understanding of all things green, arising from her work in therapeutic gardening at BC Children's Hospital and other locations around Vancouver.

Cathy Belgrave

When Cathy signed up for her first Lightwork class, she entered brand new territory. Coming from a scientific background, meditation was well outside her normal repertoire but she felt compelled to try it.

Without even being able to describe how, she shifted perceptions in all parts of her life and began making decisions that decreased stress. Encouraged, she thought she would keep meditating until it no longer felt like a fit. That day never came. She’s now a committed Lightwork practitioner and teacher.

Cathy offers Lightwork Level 1, Level 2, private classes and energy reading-healings. She blends her passions for writing, teaching and meditation by offering creative writing workshops for children and adults.

Darci Rosalie

Darci discovered Lightwork meditation in her last month of nursing school. She realized she wanted a totally new way of coping with stress, rather than relying on old, unhealthy habits.

So she turned down a fancy job in California with a big signing bonus and season’s tickets to her favourite football team. Instead she registered for Lightwork's beginners class and never looked back.

Throughout her healing journey Darci has witnessed how meditation has the power to shift tough situations and heal what needs healing.

Her favorite thing about being a Lightwork teacher is the simplicity and presence of being in the moment. The big and small of the universe come into focus and make room for significant awareness and healing.

Darci graduated from the Lightwork Apprenticeship program in March 2014. She offers energy reading sessions and meditation classes in a loving, supportive environment.

Tiffany Robinson

Tiffany has been studying meditation intensively since 2007. She is a certified Lightwork meditation teacher and a graduate of Lightwork's most advanced program, the three-year Level 7: Apprenticeship Program.

Tiffany sits on the Lightwork Ecovillage Board of Directors, and splits her time between Vancouver and the Lightwork Ecovillage on Gambier Island with her husband Scott and his daughter Cloe.

Her classes are open to teens and adults.

Victoria Smith

Victoria was searching for a way to bring ease and a sense of direction to her life. She signed up for a Lightwork class in 2006 and it was a clear fit.

She brings a deep, joyful commitment to practicing and teaching meditation. Through it, she found a way to create the fun-filled, community-oriented life she always wanted.

Victoria offers group classes, private classes and energy reading-healing sessions. She is currently enrolled in Lightwork’s Level 7 program, apprenticing to founder Scott Robinson.

Victoria is also a spa owner, fly-fisher and nature-lover. She spends free time at the Lightwork Ecovillage, a sustainable meditation community on Gambier Island.

Jacqueline Voci

Jacqueline first learned to meditate as an antidote to stress and a crazy-busy lifestyle in the tech and PR industries. As she gradually made it part of her daily routine, an entirely new way of experiencing life emerged.

In March 2014, she completed Lightwork’s two-year meditation teacher program and began its most immersive course, a three-year apprenticeship to founder, Scott Robinson.

Jacqueline teaches Lightwork's beginner classes (Levels 1 & 2) and offers meditation workshops for companies and organizations. She has hosted workshops for the Dalai Lama Center for Peace & Education, UBC Faculty of Medicine, BC Cancer Research Centre and BCIT Student Association.

She is also a writer and communications consultant.

Elizabeth Stevenson

Elizabeth decided to give Lightwork a try in 2010, after observing a friend's Lightwork journey. Deciding it was a fit, she took classes from her hometown of Victoria by phone for six years. She then packed up and moved to Vancouver to continue her studies, completing Lightwork's Level 6 Teacher Training Program in 2017.

Meditation has helped Elizabeth let go of fears and embrace all aspects of herself. She's excited that teaching now gives her the chance to offer the Lightwork techniques to other people.

Prior to Lightwork, Elizabeth completed a B.A. in anthropology, and certifications in community counselling and permaculture. Music has always been an important part of her life. She enjoys singing opera and jazz, and offering vocal improv classes.

Leslie Dickout

Leslie took her first Lightwork meditation class by phone in 2012 while living in the busy city of New York. She was awestruck by the simplicity of the tools she learned, and how they helped her let go of old patterns. She knew she wanted to learn more.

In 2018 she completed Lightwork’s two-year meditation teacher program, and she began a three-year apprenticeship to founder Scott Robinson that same year.

Now settled in Vancouver and enjoying a much simpler life, Leslie offers Lightwork Level 1 and Level 2 classes, as well as private energy reading-healings.

She also works in communications at BC Recreation & Parks Association.

Zhenya Andriyash

Zhenya started taking Lightwork meditation classes in the fall of 2012 while living in New York City and working for a bank. Meditation was his way of dealing with stress-filled workplace and hectic city life.

While taking Lightwork's Next Step program, he moved to Vancouver to lead a quieter, healthier life with a focus on his spiritual development.

As of now, Zhenya is a part of the Apprenticeship program at Lightwork. He offers beginner Lightwork classes(Level 1 and 2), as well as reading-healing sessions.

Having a job in the tech sector, Zhenya finds his meditation practice to be essential for having wellness and balance in his life.
